The Mirage ushered in a new era of elegance on the Las Vegas Strip when it opened in 1989. This AAA Four Diamond award-winning Polynesian oasis uses lush foliage, towering waterfalls and a three-acre lagoon - highlighted by a live volcano erupting nightly - to lure passersby to the paradise inside. A dazzling white porte cochere with louvered shutters suggests you've arrived at a colonial estate.
Once inside, a tropical atrium completes the journey with palm trees towering above waterfalls and pools that meander through a jungle of banana trees, elephant ears and tropical orchids. The 20,000-gallon registration lobby aquarium contains an artificial coral reef home to 90 species of sharks, puffer fish and angelfish.
With more than 3,000 guest rooms and suites, featuring imported Indonesian marble in the entryways and bathrooms, custom-made wall coverings, carpeting and artwork, a desk, dual-line phones and high-speed Internet access, cater to both the leisure and business traveler (Mirage Events Center offers over 171,000-square-feet of convention space). Six opulent lanais, each with its own garden and pool, plus eight two and three-bedroom private villas allow you to unwind in style.
The European-style spa and Salon Mirage, two pools, outdoor café and luxuriously appointed private cabanas allow further relaxation opportunities.
If lounging by the pool leaves you famished, try the Samba Brazilian Steakhouse for skewered and rotisserie meats carved tableside or the steaks and seafood at Kokomo's, situated within the tropical rain forest of the atrium. The Adam Tihany-designed Carnegie Deli (the only outpost outside of NYC) and Cravings buffet (a culinary journey through an international market) offer more casual dining options.
For entertainment, Cirque du Soleil's latest creation, "LOVE," showcases the music of The Beatles in a custom-built, multi-million dollar theater. Hailed as the "entertainer of the year," Danny Gans is the resort's resident impressionist/actor/singer/comedian. In addition, myriad lounges offer lively libations and live entertainment, and, of course, the tropical-themed casino has a wide variety of slots, video poker, and table games and a race and sports book..
On the wilder side, Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden - home to the White Lions of Timbavati and the Royal White Tigers of Nevada - and dolphin habitat - in which a family of Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins resides - features educational programs and public viewing.
