The Downtown AreaAway from The Strip in the greater Downtown Las Vegas area are yet more casinos as well as other draws to amuse and delight, principally a string of museums of sorts. Chief among them are the Elvis-A-Rama and Liberace museums, devoted to those entertainers; the Las Vegas Natural History Museum with its animated dinosaur exhibit that features a 35-foot Tyrannosaurus Rex; the 30,000-square-foot Las Vegas Art Museum with its 200-plus works permanent collection; the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, where more than 100 hands-on exhibits thrill youngsters; the Nevada State Museum, filled with artifacts and exhibits depicting the history of Southern Nevada; and the Atomic Testing Museum, which traces the history of the Nevada Test Site. And then there are the equally interesting Southern Nevada Zoologicgal-Botanical Park and the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park, the latter built around a Mormon fort that dates from 1855 and is believed to be the oldest building of its kind in Nevada. Also in the Downtown area is a four-block section along Fremont Street, between Main and 4th streets, which was once known as the “Glitter Gulch” and is now a pedestrian mall sheltered under a 90-foot high latticed canopy. Here you can experience the free, computer-controlled light and music shows every night, which debuted in 1995, and feature a dazzling 2.1 million lights.
