Pearl District and Nob Hill

Pearl District

The Pearl District makes up the heart of Downtown Portland. Situated just a few blocks west of Old Town/ Chinatown, this is in many ways a “do not miss” part of Portland, where you’ll find a majority of the city’s chic, upscale shops, galleries and gourmet restaurants. Also, notably, this is where the multi-tiered, Powell’s City of Books, the world’s largest bookstore, takes up virtually an entire block. Powell’s is in fact a place almost of pilgrimage, packed with well over a million volumes, where you could easily lose yourself and not be found.

Another noteworthy institution in the Pearl District is Jimmy Mak’s Bar and Grill, renowned for its live music “on tap,” rated among the world’s 100 best places to enjoy live jazz. And, yes, the local brews are an added bonus.

Keep in mind, too, that the first Thursday of every month is Pearl’s art gallery night, when you can go gallery hopping to view works of both local as well as visiting artists.

Nob Hill

Nob Hill is just to the west-northwest of the Pearl District, largely between NW 21st and NW 23rd avenues. You can actually get there in just a few minutes from the Pearl on one of the city’s street cars. The neighborhood itself is populated with restored Victorian homes along tree-lined streets, and a lively, vibrant shopping district. There are also good, European-style cafés here, spilling over onto the sidewalks in the summer, and gourmet delicatessens, also with an international flavor. Ruebens, truffles, pasta are the order of the day for informal fare. For fine dining, however, check out the establishments dotting NW 21st.

And again, this is a neighborhood given to exploring on foot.
