Seattle Center

Seattle Center

The Seattle Center is a collection of museums, interactive centers and a couple of music and entertainment venues, built around the landmark Space Needle, along the northern periphery of Downtown, and linked to points in Downtown by the city’s monorail. The center originally opened to the public in 1962, as the venue for the World’s Fair.

Seattle's Space Needle

The chief attraction here is of course the Space Needle, which shoots visitors straight up some 600 feet to the top, where a futuristic, disc-shaped structure houses a revolving restaurant and offers stunning, 360° views of the city and surrounding areas.

Seattle Center Museums and Exhibits

As for the museums and hands-on exhibits, the center includes the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, dedicated entirely to this otherworldly genre and its lead contributors, and heralded as the nation’s first such institution; the Experience Music Project, which, as a multi- use facility, serves as a rock and roll museum, a do-it- yourself sound studio and a concert venue.

Among other draws at the Seattle Center are a planetarium, two IMax theaters, the Pacific Science Center which has interactive exhibits, and the Children’s Museum, which offers a series of exciting, nature and cultural exhibits to engage children, including discovering foreign lands and cultures, exploring the bottom of the sea, and scaling a mountain.

The center is also the site of the annual Bumbershoot, among the largest arts and music celebrations in the West, and other major events and festivals year-round.
