Tangkou
Tangkou is a tiny but expanding ramshackle country town, attractively set on a river at the foot of Huangshan. New Tangkou is the name given to the development of hotels on the approach to the old town but, while the hotels here are more modern, there is little else to recommend staying in this part of town. Old Tangkou is small enough that in a short stroll you’ll come across most of its hotels, restaurants and shops. Tangkou’s principal street, Yangxi Jie, runs alongside the river and can be reached by steps down from the bridge on the main road. You can also get down into town along old Qingtun Lu, which branches off the main road on the Tunxi side of town, and holds Tangkou’s Bank of China (no ATM). Unbelievably, there’s another Bank of China with an ATM on the mountaintop at Beihai! Continuing upward for another six miles, the mountain’s main entrance is at Yungu Temple.
Sightseeing
The reason to come to this region is to climb the mighty mountain, but if you have more time there are a host of other sites that can be visited from either Tunxi or Tangkou. Foremost among them are the charming old villages in Shexian and Yixian counties. However, if you want natural rather than manmade splendor, the countryside around Tangkou has plenty to keep you occupied, including nature’s own movie sets, wildlife and bamboo rafting.
