Sightseeing
Tunxi itself doesn’t have much in the way of sightseeing but, if you won’t be visiting Shexian or Yixian, then you might want to hunt out a couple of the remaining Huizhou-style houses in the old town.
Cheng Dawei’s Abacus Museum, off Chang’an Dong Lu, is of more interest for its architecture than its contents and, as one of the few foreigners who came out here, you’ll probably make the curators day! Cheng Dawei was a renowned Ming dynasty mathematician and his houses, while in a sorry state of repair, offer some classic elements of Huizhou architectural style, including horse-head gables, butterfly tiles and intricate wood carvings.
Half a mile west of here there’s an even more dilapidated Ming residence, the Cheng Family House which is charmingly ramshackle. Both houses take some finding – make sure you have the language box on hand.
If scouring the backstreets isn’t your thing, Lao Jie (Old Street) has a collection of restored shops that will give you some idea of the Huizhou style.
