Kühlungsborn

Nearby Kühlungsbronn is the largest beach resort in the state and very much alive. It has accommodations in all price classes but the majority of visitors rent apartments or holiday homes. Many buildings here date from the late 19th century and are in a Classical Historicism or Art Nouveau style. The town has a large beechwood forest.

The main attraction is the long beach, which is well-maintained. As with most other German beaches, a small admission fee is payable and FKK (nude) beaches are on both far ends of the town. The town can claim a world first – the Strandkorb (above), so popular with German beachgoers, was invented here in 1882. These rattan seats can be rented on all German beaches and are useful not only for shade, but more important to cut the wind that often blows mercilessly.

The Molli steam train terminus in Kühlungsborn-West has a small exhibition on the steam train. The Kühlungsborn-Ost part of town is more alive and more interesting. It also has a pier over 200 m (660 feet) long, where boat cruises to nearby towns depart during the high season.

Kühlungsborn is only minutes by car from Heiligendamm or can be reached via the Molli steam train. It is a six-km (3.6-mile) walk (about 90 minutes) or you can cycle along the coastal road from Heiligendamm.
