Pleasure cruises on the Rhine have been popular since the 19th century. Although it is possible to take cruises lasting several days, more popular and affordable are daytrips lasting from less than an hour to a full day. Boats operate generally from April to October, with the main season between May and September. Several companies ply the Rhine route but the most established is Köln-Düsseldorf, better known simply as KD. It is sometimes possible to do the whole route from Mainz to Cologne, but the stretch between Rüdesheim and Koblenz is particularly popular, with many daily departures. If time is limited, the best part of the route is between Kaub or Oberwesel and St Goar or St Goarhausen – this part includes the Loreley. KD has several special rates, including free trips on birthdays, half-price for over 60s on Monday and Friday, and two for the price of one on Tuesday if two bicycles are taken with you. (Bicycles are always transported for free.) Passengers arriving on DB railways receive 20% discount.
