Kaub

Pfalzgrafenstein on the Rhine in Kaub, Germany (cc)

Kaub

Kaub is a small town on the right bank of the Rhine, notable as the locale of Pfalzgrafenstein, a tiny fortress built on island in the Rhine in 1327 by Ludwig of Bavaria. Interestingly, Ludwig’s entry into the Rhine toll extortion business through this venture enraged even the Pope. But much of what is seen today dates from 1607 when the fortifications were strengthened. Visits to the castle, which is sparsely furnished, are possible though not particularly rewarding. It is best viewed from a distance of the riverbank.

In Kaub itself, on the town's main street, Metzgerstraße, stands a statue of Prussian Field Marshall Blücher, built to commemorate the crossing of the Rhine via a pontoon bridge of the Prussian and Russian armies on New Year’s Eve of 1813-1814. Napoleon, who was in Mainz at that stage, was caught off-guard and shortly thereafter dispatched to Elba. The small Blüchermuseum at Hotel Stadt Mannheim on Metzgergasse 6 is actually housed in the former headquarters of Blücher. It has mainly 19th-century military memorabilia and information on the historic crossing.

There are other historic buildings on Metzgerstraße as well, also beautifully preserved.
