The Marksburg castle is an impressive sight. It can be seen from afar perched on a small steep hill. The defense possibilities are obvious even to the untrained eye. This is the only castle along the Middle Rhine that was never conquered or destroyed. If you have time to visit only one castle along the Rhine, make it this one. The Marksburg, was erected mainly between the 12th and 14th centuries. It was intended as a refuge in times of war and was seldom occupied during peacetime. The building is generally in good, authentic condition. When entering, note how the main gate was made smaller so no man on a horse could enter. The view from the battery is phenomenal. The large herb garden has 170 different species, including poisonous ones. The impressive armory collection has items from 500 BC to the 15th century. A small 1450 breech-loader is one of the oldest cannons in Germany. The interior can only be seen on a guided tour – ask for an English-language brochure when buying tickets.
