San Marco Quarter: Piazza San Marco
Museo di San Marco
On the Piazza San Marco, which is reached by heading north along Via Cavour, are the Dominican convent and church that dominates the top of the square, both constructed by Michelozzo for Cosimo Il Vecchio, between 1437 and 1446. Now a museum, it is essentially dedicated to Fra Angelico (also known as Fra’ Giovanni da Fiesole), whose frescoes in the cloister and in the dormitory corridor constitute some of the most important of his works. The tour takes you from the 20 or so paintings found in the large hall to the right of the entrance (best known for The Last Judgment and Deposition) past an impressive Crucifixion fresco (1441-42) in the Sala Capitolare, up the stairs to a stunning Annunciation (circa 1445) and into the cells where frescoes depict scenes from the Life of Christ and figures from the Dominican order. The cells, once the living quarters of Savonarola, the prior here, are decorated with a number of artifacts from his time, including the famous portrait by Fra’ Bartolomeo.
