Caorle

Caorle is an old fishing port situated just to the south of Bibione. It is of course abundant in attractive beaches. Besides which, the principal draws here are the town's colorful historical center and casoni (traditional fishermen’s huts).

Caorle was originally established in the 1st century BC by Romans, and some vestiges of the ancient settlement still remain. However, at the heart of the town now stands the Romanesque-cum-Byzantine-Ravennate Cathedral of St. Stephen, built in 1038 AD, within which you can search out the original sacrificial altar, Ara Licovia, from the Roman times. But it's the cathedral's 48-meter-high bell tower, dating from 1048 AD, that is its most domineering feature. There is also a liturgical museum at the cathedral to add to the interest.

Another place of interest in Caorle is the Church of the Blessed Virgin of the Angel, situated on a tiny promontory on the sea. The present-day church was rebuilt in the 18th century. The church is also the setting for two of Caorle's most notable annual festivals: the Feast of Incoronation, which includes fireworks, and the Feast of the Virgin of the Angel.

Caorle lies largely between the estuaries of the Livenza and Lemene rivers. It has a population of around 12,000.
