Grant Park, Sweet Auburn, Ansley Park and Virginia-Highland

Grant Park

To the east of I-75/I-85, in the neighborhood of Zoo Atlanta, is Grant
Park, one of Atlanta’s oldest neighborhoods, built between 1895 and 1915. Like Inman Park, Grant Park became a center of restoration during the 1970s.

Sweet Auburn

To the west of Inman Park is Atlanta’s most racially integrated neighborhood, centered around Auburn Avenue. Called the Sweet Auburn district, this area is a popular residential area for African-Americans.

The area is noted for having been the center of black nightlife during a time when African-Americans were restricted from frequenting white-owned businesses.

Today, Auburn Avenue is the center of Atlanta’s African-American history, and features the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, the Martin Luther King National Park Service Visitors
Center, King’s birth home and Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King and his father preached.

This area underwent extensive renovations just prior to the 1996 Olympic Games.

Ansley Park

One of Atlanta’s most popular neighborhoods, located just north of Midtown, is Ansley Park. The neighborhood began construction in 1905 as Atlanta’s first automobile-oriented community and became one of Atlanta’s premier residential areas. At one time the governor’s residence was at 205 The Prado.

Wedged between two of Atlanta’s busiest streets, Peachtree and Piedmont, the Ansley Park area is an oasis of almost pastoral beauty within the confines of the city. The entire neighborhood is listed in National Historic District Register.

The Ansley Park area is probably one of the most convoluted neighborhoods in Atlanta, and only the brave should venture out without a map and compass, or a long-time resident as guide.

Virginia-Highland

Virginia-Highland takes its name for the intersection of Virginia and North Highland avenues, to the east of Piedmont Park. This district is a popular spot for Atlanta’s young professionals. At one time this prime area was in danger of becoming part of a planned highway system, but the efforts of community leaders and activists prevented that.

The neighborhood is an eclectic mix of older homes, smaller bungalows, and homes divided for apartment living. Noted for its renovations of older homes, shopping district, and one-of-a-kind eateries, this area has great charm and drawing power

Virginia-Highland is the perfect place to go for a day’s shopping or a leisurely stroll. It’s even better at night, becoming the second most popular nightlife destination in Atlanta. Parking is scarce, especially at night, but you’ll find the area accessible to most major expressways.

Decatur

Situated just six miles east of Atlanta, Decatur gives the appearance of being an Atlanta suburb, but in fact it is a separate
town that predates Atlanta by 13 years. Decatur is known for its historic town square and stately homes. It is also the home of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Emory University, and the Carter
Presidential Center.
