Karl Marx Haus
Karl Marx Haus can be reached from the Roman Bridge by following Karl-Marx-Straße until it changes to Brückenstraße. The first part of this road was not renamed in order to preserve the historic address of where Karl Marx was born. The Karl-Marx-Haus, located at Brueckenstrasse 10, is a lovely 18th-century patrician house. It is best described as a documentation center and its prized possessions are first editions of Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto. Trier of Marx’s youth had a population of 10,000 and his first ideas were based on the exploitation of vineyard workers that he observed in the Mosel Valley.
Thermen am Viehmarkt
The Thermen am Viehmarkt (Forum Baths) were rediscovered in 1987 during excavation work for an underground parking garage. The baths were covered by a modern glass and steel box allowing passersby a peek at most of the ruins. The ruins cover a surprisingly large area with many remaining arches and tunnels. Descriptions are in German only and rather vague.
