Römische Palastaula (Basilika)

A few minutes stroll down Liebfraustraße from the Bischöflichen Museum is the second-largest single-room structure from Roman times, the Basilika or Römische Palastaula, which currently houses the Protestant church Zum Erloeser (Our Savior), Konstantinplatz. The pillar-less room was the throne room of Emperor Constantine and is an impressive 27 m (90 feet) wide, 33 m (108 feet) high, and 67 m (220 feet) long. The windows narrow progressively toward the center of the building to create the optical illusion of the hall being even bigger. The original art and hollow floor heating system was lost after the Franks invaded and settled for some time in the roofless ruin. It was later used by the archbishop of Trier, then, since the mid-19th century, after Trier became part of Prussia, as the first Protestant church in this predominantly Catholic city. Decorations are limited, but note the organ pipes in the front window and the beautifully coffered wooden ceiling.
