Church of Santa Felicita
Continue along Via dei Guicciardini to reach the Church of Santa Felicita (you’d already have had a sneaky look inside if you managed to get a ticket into the Corridoio Vasariano, see page 41). Its Brunelleschi-designed Chapel Capponi guards two works by Pontormo: the striking Annunciation (fresco on the right) and a canvas titled Deposition, showing Jesus being ripped from the Virgin’s arms (1525-28), which is considered one of the great works of Florentine Mannerism. From here it’s an enjoyable hike up to the spectacular vantage points of San Miniato al Monte and Piazzale Michelangelo (take Bus #12 or #13 from the station if you don’t want to walk). For the best and most scenic approach, take a right up Costa di San Giorgio up behind Forte Belvedere (and some magnificent views over the Giardino di Boboli), before heading left down Via di Belvedere (look out for sections of the old city walls) to arrive at the ancient city gate to San Miniato. From here a right up the winding Via del Monte alle Croci leads you to the foot of a large stairway. Once scaled, it brings you out in front of the celebrated church.
