Granada Travel Guide

Introduction

Granada, "Grana" to the Granadinos, was once the mighty stronghold of the Moors, who endowed it with one of Spain's most stunning architectural treasures, the Alhambra Palace, which remains today the country's foremost attraction. The city itself is hugely colorful, with its multiculturalism and a rich architectural heritage forged by Spanish and Mudéjar influences. There are lively neighborhoods populated with gypsies, hippies and Moroccans selling jalabas and incense, and artisan shops handcrafting guitars and pottery. There is an ancient Moorish city here, the Albaicín, which remains a principal visitor draw. And then there are the city's residents themselves, the Granadinos, an interesting lot who spice up the nightlife and offer up one of the greatest ethnic diversities of any city in Spain, together with a characteristic speech with clipped phrases. Granada, by the way, is also an ideal base for exploring such nearby places of interest as the wilderness areas of the Sierra Nevada, the cave-rich town of Guadix, the Alpujarras villages in the lush valleys and foothills of the Sierra Nevada, and the beach resorts of the Costa del Sol.

Location

Granada is both the capital and cultural hub of the province of Andalucía, situated in the fertile, flat plains of Vega at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
