Flagstaff

Flagstaff

Flagstaff is a city of 61,000, situated at an elevation of 7,000 feet, roughly 80 miles south of the Grand Canyon, and surrounded by one of the world’s largest Ponderosa Pine forests. Also, it is located on historic Route 66, at the junction of Interstates 17 and 40, and has all the amenities that one could want, making it an ideal base from which to access the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and from there explore the rest of the canyon.

Besides the Grand Canyon, there are other places of interest in and around Flagstaff, including three national monuments, notable among them Walnut Canyon, which features ancient cliff dwellings built into steep canyon walls, where the original peublo people lived nearly a thousand years ago. There’s also a 200-acre arboretum at Flagstaff, where you’ll find one of the country’s largest display of wildflowers; and, just out of town on the 11,500-foot Mt Humphrey’s is the Arizona Snowbowl, offering skiing and snowboarding during winter and a “skyride” on its scenic chairlift during summer.

Flagstaff’s historic downtown district is worth visiting as well, dating from the 1890s and lined with a good mix of unique shops and boutiques, and restaurants and live entertainment venues. Amoong other points of interest here are the Pioneer Museum, a repository of the area’s history; the Museum of Northern Arizona, which boasts some 5 million items in its geology, anthropology, biology and fine arts collections; and the turn-of-the-century Riordan Mansion, now part of state historic park.

Before leaving town, try to also visit the Lowell Laboratory, where the planet of Pluto was discovered, and which now offers great star gazing.
