Five Points

Five PointsFive Points is named for the fact that five streets intersect here, at the very point where, during the 1800s, the city’s tram line ended. And it was the tramway company that first dubbed its last stop “Five Points.” This is, in any case, one of the most historic parts of Denver, located just to the northeast of Downtown, centered on Welton Street. Originally developed in the 1860s, it became one of the city’s first residential neighborhoods. Later on, during the early 1900s, it came of age as a hub for African American jazz musicians, among them the likes of Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker, who performed at jazz clubs and music halls here, frequently staying at the still-standing, historic Rossonian Hotel. In the mid 1900s, the area also attracted Beat Generation icons Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac, the latter weaving Five Points into his classic, On The Road.Present DayFive Points is now a modern commercial district, but one that has retained much of its historic charm. Its African- American heritage, particularly, is well-preserved in its Black American West Museum and Heritage Center, devoted to the history of African American pioneers (including Black cowboys and miners), with more than 35,000 artifacts and exhibits on display, including old newspapers and photographs, and such items as vintage cowboy boots. The area is now also home to the Stiles African American Heritage Center, the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, the renowned Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble Studios, and the Roundtree Art Center.
