Lower Downtown (LoDo)

LoDoAs cities go, Denver is a fairly dynamic one. At the heart of it lies its business district, or Lower Downtown, locally known as LoDo, tucked into a pocket west of Interstate 25, just above Cherry Creek North. This is both an historic and lively part of town, revitalized and transformed from a warehouse district into a hub of jazz clubs and other entertainment venues, and upscale restaurants, shops, galleries and lofts. Among the prominent shopping centers here are the 16th Street Mall, a 12-block-long pedestrian mall; and Larimer Square, which has several one-of-a-kind boutiques and restaurants, housed in restored Victorian buildings. Here, too, are the the Wynkoop Brewing Company, Downtown Aquarium, the Colorado Convention Center, and the Denver Performing Arts Complex, notable as the second largest theatrical venue in the country, after New York’s Lincoln Center, boasting nine theaters. The Colorado Ballet, Colorado Symphony, and Denver Center Theater Company, all perform here.Downtown MuseumsDenver’s city center is also brimming with museums that fairly reflect its cultural diversity. Here, just to the south of Larimer Square and the 16th Street Mall, you can search out the Colorado History Museum, packed with exhibits depicting the region’s past; and the Denver Art Museum, where the architecture alone will blow your mind, and which also houses an extraordinary collection of Native American art. Then there are the Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Museum of Outdoor Arts, and the colorful Muséo de las Americas, devoted to collecting and exhibiting Latino art and cultural artifacts from across the Americas.Other Points of interest in Downtown Denver include the State Capitol, built in 1886 from locally mined granite and marble; the U.S. Mint, the second largest repository for gold in the nation; and at the north end of LoDo, Coors Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Colorado Rockies.
