Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (Via della Canonica)
A must for those enthralled by the Duomo, this museum charts the progress of its construction from the very first designs and tools used. It also houses the most precious works of art from the Duomo, Baptistery and Campanile, including the initial bas-reliefs decorating the Campanile, four of the panels of the Baptistery’s “Gate of Paradise” and the marble cantorie (choir lofts) by Donatello and Luca della Robbia, formerly in the Duomo. The museum also has a few great sculptures, including works by Arnolfo di Cambio (originally intended for the Duomo façade), Michelangelo’s uncompleted Pietà, right, and Donatello’s wooden figure of a tormented Mary Magdalene. There is also St John’s Altar, its silver and enamel coating perfected by the best of the 14th and 15th centuries’ artists and silversmiths, including Michelozzo, Verrocchio, Antonio del Pollaiolo and Bernardo Cennini.
