Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria

You’ll quickly arrive from here onto the Piazza della Signoria (also called Piazza dei Priori), a square that draws mixed reaction. Although DH Lawrence once named it the most perfect square in the world (it has changed considerably since his day), many consider it a bit of a letdown – the scruffiness of its form and the blandness of the pizza places that run onto it unworthy of the sights it contains. Worse still, many of the buildings that surround it, including the tower of the Palazzo Vecchio, seem permanently covered in scaffolding, making it difficult to imagine the Piazza at its best. But aesthetics aside, you can’t take away the power of the attractions that it holds. Yes, most of the best sculptures are now replaced by copies – Michelangelo’s David (original in the Galleria dell’Accademia), Donatello’s Marzocco (original in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello) and his Judith and Holofernes (original in the Palazzo Vecchio). But the gloriousmarble creations on show in the statue-lined Loggia dei Lanzi, Ammannati’s much-loved (and much-hated) Neptune Fountain, the grandeur of the Palazzo Vecchio and the stately approach to the Uffizi cannot be denied.

Loggia dei Lanzi (also known as the Loggia della Signoria): Created in the 14th century as a ceremonial spot for the Palazzo Vecchio, the loggia became the open-air sculpture gallery you see today in the 18th century, with the addition of works such as Benvenuto Cellini’s bronze Perseus and Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine Women (1583).
