Via dei Calzaiuoli

Via dei Calzaiuoli

Once you’ve satisfied your interest in the treasures of Piazza del Duomo, head down Via dei Calzaiuoli, a large pedestrian street that links it to the second great square of ancient Florence: the Piazza della Signoria. This thoroughfare is also worth a stroll in the early evening, gelato in hand, when the boutiques and jewelry shops close. It’s then that street performers and vendors take over the pavements with the usual array of knickknacks and counterfeit designer wear, plus the odd opera-singing busker.

To your right you’ll see the 19th-century Piazza della Repubblica, a good place to stop for a quick espresso on one of its large caffè terraces. Just past the square (still on Via dei Calzaiuoli), coming as a bit of a surprise between the street’s shops and caffès, you’ll find one of Florence’s most charismatic churches.
